What do we know about Focus Bloc’s new NFT collection?

Focus Bloc has recovered 333 photos from the “Movie Star News” collection. Siblings Irving and Paula Klaw founded Movie Star News in 1938. The Midtown Manhattan shop sold still photographs from major Hollywood films for over 80 years before closing due to Covid-19 lockdowns. During that time, Movie Star News helped define pop culture and compiled a world-famous photography collection.

The Movie Star News collection features stills from movies such as Scarface, The Godfather, James Bond, Star Wars, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Full Metal Jacket, and more.  Some of the celebrities included in the drop are Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Audrey Hepburn, and Jack Nicholson. Fittingly, Focus Bloc named the project “Hollywood: from Golden Age to the first Blockbusters”.

The NFT collection will launch later this month. To mint, buyers must first sign up to be whitelisted. After that, each wallet can mint one NFT for .5 ETH plus gas fees.

Has Focus Bloc launched an NFT collection before?

Focus Bloc collaborated with Paris Match, a French-language weekly news magazine that covers news and celebrity lifestyle features, for the art platform’s first release. The collection features 120 photos from the famous French photographer Jean-Claude Deutsch showcasing 23 different celebrities.

Some of the celebrities included are David Bowie, Brigitte Bardot, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Michael Jackson. The photos were taken during the 1960s-1990s and capture many of the celebrities at their respective peaks of fame.

The collection launched in January and has a lifetime volume of 31 ETH. The current OpenSea floor sits at .7 ETH with a most recent sale of .8 ETH in early April. Impressively, only 15 NFTs out of the 120-piece collection are listed for sale as of today.

Do Vintage Photos make good NFTs?

NFTs are the perfect vehicle for vintage photographs to bridge into the digital future. By offering authenticity provable by blockchain technology, NFTs provide a way to verify the ownership and legitimacy of any given photo. When someone buys an NFT, they can check the on-chain transactions to ensure they are buying the original photograph and not something that has been tampered with or duplicated.

Furthermore, NFTs also give photographers the ability to create scarcity for their work. They can choose edition sizes and create provenance for photographers, ensuring buyers are purchasing a piece from an enforceable collection size.

Lastly, NFTs offer a way to easily trade, buy, and sell vintage photographs. Collectors can now transfer using blockchain technology. This ability also helps to create a more fluid market for photography.  Ownership rights can be bought and sold in seconds to and from anywhere in the world.

Focus Bloc is pioneering how photography with integrate into Web3. The upcoming “Hollywood: from Golden Age to the first Blockbusters” will be another step forward for the intertwining of vintage photography and blockchain technology.
