More than one year ago, the rapper Lil Yachty filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against NFT seller Opulous. The case has just been settled, according to court documents obtained by the media Rolling Stone.
What was this case about?
The original lawsuit alleges that Opulous, a company operating as Ditto Music, used rapper Lil Yachty‘s name and image without his permission. Furthermore, Ditto Music falsely represented him as their flagship artist partnership. That helped the company secure over $6.5 million in venture capital funds.
Although Lil Yachty and Ditto Music held conference calls to discuss the possibility of a collaboration, they never reached an agreement or agreed on any deal terms. Despite this, in June 2021, Ditto Music allegedly moved forward with its NFT series, claiming it would be “led by world-famous artists including Lil Yachty.” The company even utilized a photo of the rapper for promotional purposes.
The details of the settlement have not been revealed as of the time of writing.
Who is Lil Yachty?
Lil Yachty, a 25-year-old rapper, singer, and songwriter, was born as Miles Parks McCollum. He gained fame with the release of his two mixtapes, “Summer Songs 2” and “Lil Boat.” Prior to that, his singles “One Night” and “Minnesota” attracted attention in August 2015.
Lil Yachty has been one of the early adopters of blockchain and cryptocurrency. He launched his first NFTs in June 2021. In addition to that, he participated in the launch of the Binance NFT Marketplace the same month. He also released the “YachtyCoin” on Nifty Gateway as an NFT.
The dispute between the rapper and Ditto Music exemplifies how some NFT creators exploit the fame of celebrities to generate profit. Although the details of the settlement have not been disclosed, it is likely that Ditto Music paid a significant amount to resolve the issue.
