LACMA x Deafbeef: Classic Art Meets Cutting-Edge Technology in Epic NFT Collaboration

LACMA, the renowned art museum, is diving deeper into NFT art with an experimental collection by Deafbeef. The collection offers a unique interpretation of the 19th-century artwork of Eadweard Muybridge. Significantly, this is part of the museum’s ongoing exploration of the world of NFTs. Let’s dive in!

LACMA’s Collaboration with Deafbeef Shakes Up the Art World

Prepare for a groundbreaking collaboration between LACMA and Deafbeef! They are blending classic art with cutting-edge technology in an epic NFT project. In February, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) made a splash in the NFT world. This is due to their acquisition of a valuable collection of tokenized artwork. However, the museum is not merely collecting NFTs, it is also collaborating with renowned Web3 creators to bring a fresh and experimental perspective to classic art. By partnering with these creators, LACMA aims to pay homage to traditional artwork in innovative and exciting ways, furthering their exploration into the world of NFTs.

LACMA’s “Remembrance of Things Future” program ramps up this week. This is because of the release of two interactive NFT collections from Deafbeef. Drawing inspiration from the works of Eadweard Muybridge, Deafbeef’s Ethereum NFT project, “Noumenon + Chronophotograph,” is an extraordinary blend of classic and contemporary art. Markedly, Deadbeef is a renowned pseudonymous artist who utilizes a C code compiler to create unique art.

Eadweard Muybridge’s groundbreaking work in motion photography during the 19th century provided a foundation for future film, animation, and other art forms. His use of chronological photo sequences, notably “The Horse in Motion,” captured the motion of a galloping horse. Significantly, it has helped shape modern visual storytelling. These iconic sequences even made an appearance in Jordan Peele’s 2022 film “Nope.”

Deafbeef brings coded art to life with LACMA’s NFT initiative

Deafbeef’s contribution to LACMA’s “Remembrance of Things Future” initiative consists of 16 unique Ethereum NFTs titled “Noumenon”. Each animation is one minute long and created using compiled C code. Deafbeef described the monochromatic audiovisual works as “representing unknowable reality beyond our immediate senses.”

The associated smart contract enables the eventual owner of each Noumenon to take, or delegate another wallet to take, a chronophotograph still image sequence that turns into a separate NFT. The smart contract contains a unique “releaseShutter” function. This can be called to generate the still snapshot.

A potentially endless number of chronophotographs can be taken from each Noumenon NFT, providing a stream of unique editions that could be kept or traded. However, there’s a catch: a time lock that exponentially expands, doubling after each snapshot. Interestingly, every subsequent chronophotograph is also a larger, clearer, and higher-resolution still sequence.

LACMAs’ initiative demonstrates how NFTs can be used to offer new and experimental ways to engage with classic art. Deafbeef’s innovative use of smart contracts and C code to create unique and interactive NFTs is a testament to the potential of this growing technology in the art world.
