He’s one of the most famous robots in the world and an icon in Japan. Astro Boy is now making his way to the blockchain. Premint for the ATOM Genesis NFT collection will start this Friday, April 7th, commemorating the 20th biological birthday of Astro Boy. The creators of the collection, Animoca Brands Japan and Mad World, already announced many perks and utilities.
What is the ATOM Genesis NFT Collection?
The ATOM Genesis NFT Collection is a series centered around the famous character of Astro Boy, known in Japan as “Mighty Atom.” This collection is the result of a partnership between the Akihabara Area Tourism organization, Animoca Brands Japan, and Mad World. It comprises 150 unique NFTs created by 40 Japanese artists from the Akiba Eden community. Moreover, they’re all licensed by Tezuka as derivatives of Astro Boy.
Access to the pre-mint phase will open on Friday. Thanks to their ATOM Genesis NFTs, holders will gain access to various utilities in the next three months, such as immersive experiences and generative art applications.
All NFTs in the collection will be certified by the official marketplace for the Association of Japanese Animations, known as “Open Post.” The platform will issue on-chain certifications for every token from the ATOM Genesis collection.
Who is Astro Boy?
Astro Boy is an android boy with human emotions and the protagonist of a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. He first appeared in an anime that aired from 1952 to 1968. In the story, the robot’s birthdate is April 7th, 2003.
In the narrative, Astro Boy is created by Umataro Tenma after the recent death of his son, Tobio. A robot circus run by Hamegg eventually purchases Astro, but Professor Ochanomizu rescues him from servitude. Finally, the scientist creates a robotic family for Astro. Naturally, the pair embark on many adventures together.
The aesthetics of the manga series have inspired generations of manga authors. In fact, Osamu Tezuka’s style now defines the “anime” style. For example, the author was one of the first to adorn his characters with big eyes. Moreover, he popularized the Disney-influenced “cartoony” style in Japan.
While NFTs are gaining popularity in Japan, the ATOM Genesis collection will certainly attract many collectors. More than 70 years after his first appearance in a manga, Astro Boy is far from being an obsolete robot.
