Are Twitter NFTs being pushed by Elon Musk?

The integration of crypto and NFTs by Twitter is frequently a topic of speculation, particularly when the social network’s CEO, Elon Musk, replaces the Twitter logo with that of Dogecoin before sharing an NFT from Punk 6529.

Speculations on Twitter NFTs

Dogecoin token’s price surged by over 33% this Tuesday after the well-known head Shiba Inu dog image replaced the traditional bluebird. What’s even more intriguing is that Elon Musk shared an NFT from Punk 6529 with the message: “Seize the memes of production”.

Unsurprisingly, this sparked numerous comments. On Twitter, Xero, a Web3 gaming specialist with over 16k followers, posted a tweet speculating about the imminent launch of Twitter NFTs.

“Is Elon hinting at Twitter NFTs? Let’s look at the timeline: 1. Elon removed the New York Times blue checkmark 2. Musk then swapped the Twitter icon for a Doge image 3. And he just shared a JPEG of an NFT created by 6529. Are we seizing control of information?”, Xero tweeted. He added that he would share more about this theory later.

Who is Punk 6529?

Even Beeple, the most renowned NFT artist, crafted an artwork inspired by Elon Musk’s tweet and shared it on Twitter. 6529 immediately retweeted it. Currently, there’s no further information about a potential collaboration between the prominent CryptoPunks owner and Twitter.

6529 is a significant figure in the NFT space, followed by more than 447k people on Twitter. In addition to his online presence, he actively supports the development of an open metaverse. Consequently, he created “OM“, a metaverse with the goal of “bridging virtual and physical spaces that people use in their day-to-day lives.”

This is not the first time Elon Musk has shown interest in Web3 and cryptocurrencies. While it’s challenging to predict what the capricious CEO will do, there’s a possibility of seeing Web3 and NFT applications coming to the social network in the future. Twitter NFTs could one day become a reality.
